sypnosis

When the TARDIS rematerialises inside a rocket the Doctor and Jamie are alarmed by the presence of a hostile Servo-Robot. They discover that the rocket is drifting in the orbit of a giant space station – the Wheel in Space.

Once inside this magnificent space ship they are bewildered by its complexity and sheer size. The technicians and programmers are highly trained, but who are they working for?

Suspecting the worst, the Doctor is still horrified to find the deadly Cybermen in control. What evil plan are they plotting? Who or what are the Cybermats? Can the Doctor trust anyone on board to help him stop the Wheel as it spins relentlessly through space?

NOTES

  1. Patrick Troughton did not appear in episode 2 as he was on holiday. Thus, a body double was used to substitute for the unconscious Doctor.
  2. * Deborah Watling’s appearance in episode 1 was a recap from the end of the previous story Fury from the Deep. Unusually, she received an on-screen credit for this appearance. Michael Goldie previously played Craddock in The Dalek Invasion of Earth (1964), whilst Kenneth Watson had played Craddock in the film version of this story, Daleks – Invasion Earth 2150 AD (1966).
  3. Clare Jenkins would go on to reprise her role as Tanya Lernov in the final episode of The War Games. Donald Sumpter would go on to play Commander Ridgeway in the third doctor story, “The Sea Devils“. More recently, he played Erasmus Darkening in the Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures two parter The Eternity Trap.
