New Fifth Doctor audios

The Mara, the snake-like demon from the 1980s stories Kinda and Snakedance, is returning in the forthcoming season of audio adventures featuring the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa.

"The three stories were recorded just after Christmas," says executive producer Nicholas Briggs, "and everyone was on brilliant form. It was quite thrilling to hear Peter Davison, Janet Fielding, Mark Strickson and Sarah Sutton – who hadn't acted together since 1983 – recreating their roles so authentically. These adventures sound just like they've fallen through a time warp!

“The mood during the recording was quite rambunctious and everyone had such a brilliant time that I wouldn’t be surprised to see this team reunited again some time in the near future…”

The season begins in July with Cobwebs by Jonathan Morris, in which the travellers land on a scientific base which they have clearly visited before. The only thing is, it hasn’t happened yet… The guest cast includes Helen Griffin (Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel), Raymond Coulthard (Hotel Babylon) and Adrian Lukis (Pride and Prejudice, Peak Practice).

The Whispering Forest by Stephen Cole follows in August, and is set on an alien world where a colony has become obsessed with cleanliness – while strange creatures are prowling among the trees. Guest stars include Hayley Atwell (who stars in the remake of The Prisoner and appeared in the audio Doctor Who story Blood of the Daleks), Paul Shelley (Four to Doomsday) and Harry Melling (the Harry Potter films) – who just happens to be the grandson of Second Doctor Patrick Troughton!

Finally, the Mara returns in The Cradle of the Snake by Marc Platt, which sees the TARDIS crew return to Manussa, a planet that they last visited in 1983’s Snakedance.

“When we knew we could get these characters back together, we realised we wanted to bring back the Mara because it was an iconic monster from the Davison era,” says Nicholas Briggs. “Original writer Christopher Bailey gave us his blessing, and Marc Platt seemed the obvious choice to write it – because Marc does ‘weird’ so wonderfully!”

The story’s guest stars include Dan Stevens (The Line of Beauty, Dracula), Vernon Dobtcheff (The War Games) and Hugh Fraser (Poirot and the audio Doctor Who story Circular Time).

Looking ahead further into 2010, the free story for subscribers in December is going to be a multi-Doctor extravaganza! Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann will all join forces in The Four Doctors in an epic fight against the Daleks…

First three episodes of Series 5 named

Thanks to our friends at Kasterborus, the first three episodes of series 5 with Matt Smith and Karen Gilan have been named

As heavily speculated, The Eleventh Hour is the title of Matt Smith’s opening episode, written by new series showrunner Steven Moffat, while Moffat also provides the second episode.

Mark Gatiss’ anticipated Dalek adventure title is also revealed…

  • Episode 1: The Eleventh Hour by Steven Moffat

  • Episode 2: The Beast Below by Steven Moffat

  • Episode 3: Victory of the Daleks by Mark Gatiss

Confirmation of the airdate for The Eleventh Hour is still yet to be announced, although IMDb lists the episode as being broadcast on Saturday, March 13th

    Bill Nighy for Series 5!

Bill Nighy is to guest star in an episode of the new series of Doctor Who.

The veteran actor will play the curator of a Vincent van Gogh exhibition in the episode, which is penned by Richard Curtis.

: "It was a real coup to get Bill Nighy in Doctor Who, especially in Richard Curtis's amazing episode. Bill plays a van Gogh expert with some similar fashion choices to The Doctor himself."

The story is set both in the present day and 19th Century France. This Life actor Tony Curran was previously confirmed in the role of van Gogh.

The episode - the tenth in the new series - was filmed on location in Croatia and Cardiff over Christmas.

Doctor Who End Of Time Final Ratings!

After a three-week delay caused by the implementation of their new data collection system, the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (BARB) have at last released the final ratings for The End of Time - Part Two, broadcast on BBC One in the UK on the first of January. These final ratings are more accurate than the initial overnight figures, and include those who recorded the programme to watch within seven days of transmission.

The figures show that the episode achieved an average of 11.79 million viewers for its BBC One broadcast, placing it 2nd in the charts for that week, behind only the episode of EastEnders that immediately followed it in that evening's schedule, which gained 12.09 million. This figure makes the episode a third most-watched since Doctor Who returned in 2005, behind only Voyage of the Damned (13.31 million) and The Next Doctor (13.10 million).

An additional 482,000 viewers watched The End of Time - Part Two on its simultaneous showing in high definition on the BBC HD channel, making it that channel's most-watched programme of the week. Although BARB offers broadcasters the option to combine the figures for a simultaneous high definition broadcast with that on the parent standard definition channel, the BBC do not exercise this option, and so the official final figure for the BBC One broadcast of the episode remains at 11.79 million.

Doctor Who Wins at NTA awards!

Doctor Who has once again been successful at the National Television Awards (NTAs), held at the O2 Arena in London this evening and broadcast live on ITV1 in the UK. This was the 15th running of the ceremony, at which television programmes and personalities are given awards voted on by the British public.

The programme has won the Drama category at every NTA ceremony since 2005, although the awards were not held in 2009. This year it won the audience vote ahead of BBC One stablemate Casualty, Channel 4's Shameless and ITV1's The Bill. The award was collected by David Tennant, Bernard Cribbins, June Whitfield and Elisabeth Sladen, with Cribbins delivering the acceptance speech, thanking and praising Tennant, and the production team, which he named as the best he has ever worked with in British television.

Tennant has separately been nominated in the Drama Performance category, the winner of which will be announced later. Tennant also presented the award for "Star Travel Documentary" earlier in the ceremony

Sarah Jane Adventures Season 4 confirmed

The BBC has now confirmed Sarah Jane Adventures has been commissioned for a fourth series. More information soon.

    Russell Tovey to join Torchwood?

Star of Being Human and Doctor Who guest star in Voyage of the Damned and The End of Time, Part Two Russell Tovey has been quizzed by SFX about the likelihood of Midshipman Alonso Frame appearing in Torchwood…

Frame was the subject of a no doubt ravenous Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) in the last segment of The End of Time, Part Two as the Doctor wandered around doing favours for his old companions.

So - could Frame turn up in Torchwood Series 4 as a new lover for Harkness?

“I was surprised when Russell T Davies asked me to come back,” he told us. “I’ve no idea if I’ll be in Torchwood, although it’s something I’d be open to if they asked me. I didn’t really realise when I was filming it, but when it was on people suddenly were saying, ‘Oh you’re going to be the new Ianto,’ and I had no idea what that meant. I didn’t even realise Midshipman Frame was gay!

But yes, I suppose Midshipman Frame could be the new Ianto. Or they might have just gone to the disabled toilets and come out again and that’s it…”

  • Nice.

    Series 5 unaffected for filming

Filming on the new series of Doctor Who is going ahead despite the heavy snow in Cardiff.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were spotted filming in Wales recently as the BBC prepares to release a new publicity image for series five.

The Sun quotes a show insider as saying: "Snow might stop mere humans but not The Doctor."

In recent days, filming on UK soaps Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks has been cancelled due to the snow, while production on EastEnders has been severely disrupted.
